melkam addis amet!

In other words...Happy New Year! In the spirit of the Ethiopian New Year celebrated on September 11th (they use a different calendar - they are ringing in 2004), I decided to make a New Year's resolution to be sure that we celebrate Ethiopian holidays in our family and make a point to teach Weredesh about her culture. Today we celebrated by making doro wat (a common Ethiopian dish). Of course she loved to help. It took hours, but that's because there's a spice-infused butter that needed to be made, as well as berbere paste. Both are chock full of spices (I think 28 in all?) and now I have extra in the freezer for future dishes. :) Doro wat is a typically spicy chicken stew, but I made it mild so that Weredesh would try it. She LOVED the hard-boiled eggs especially, and the chicken. YAY! I attempted a "quick injera" recipe, but it was marginal. I need to find a good fool-proof recipe and I think I've heard of others using a crepe maker to cook it.

After seeing her friends on Facebook in their celebratory dress, Weredesh wanted to put hers on. Although it's small, I dug it out of her memory box and she squeezed into it. It's still cuter than cute! Hopefully we can go back to Ethiopia in the next few years and get her a new dress.

We also picked wild sunflowers this morning while out on a hike. Daisies are typically given on Ethiopian New Year to symbolize the end of the rainy season and the beginning of a new year with sunshine and new growth.

Some pics to commemorate the occasion:
