Last week we traveled over the snowy pass to Portland to visit Weredesh's eye doctor at OHSU and get an update. (Side note: did I say snowy pass? Maybe I should have said deathly, snowy, icy path to hell? More on that later...)
Anyways, regardless of the HORRIBLE driving conditions, we had a good trip to Portland. A friend of our set us up in a beautiful suite overlooking the Columbia River. And Weredesh's eyes are doing well. They dilated her eyes and now we have a slightly adjusted prescription. Her eyes are different strengths - one is 20/20 and the other is 20/30. So this means we might have to patch her strong eye in the near future. It depends on how the 20/30 eye does over time. She will get her new glasses next week and then 6 weeks later they'll examine her eyes again. The difference in her vision means that one eye might not be developing as much as it should. We'll see soon. But we want to closely monitor her one eye to be sure that it doesn't start decreasing in vision.
This time her exam will be close to home, as we are NOT driving over the pass anywhere in the near future. We most likely picked the worst day to drive over and saw nothing but cars in ditches, semi-trucks jack knifing before our eyes, and our car sliding all over the place. It was terrible. We were so exhausted from the stress of driving, and what sucked is that we had to do it all over again the next day to come home. The ride home turned out to be much better, but still icy and slowwww...it was about a 5 hour trip each time.
What was FUNNY about our travels is that the conversations in the car were HYSTERICAL. As Cory and I were white-knuckled in the front seats, Weredesh was in the back completely unfazed, singing at the top of her lungs or asking us a thousand questions such as:
"WHY_______________??? (fill in the blank for any situation)
"Is Christmas coming to MY house today?"
"Does Christmas have doggies?" (You believe she thinks Christmas is the name of a person?)
"Jack and I are going to the moon!"
Those introductory questions led to GREAT conversations which I think kept us laughing instead of crying on that trip.
And it seems like this year is her first real holiday season, because she's totally "getting it." She asks about Thanksgiving, Santa, Christmas, presents, lights on the tree, her birthday, etc. So fun! And this Wednesday she turns THREE!
